- In detail
In the food industry carbon dioxide is used as preservative and designated on packaging under the E290 code, and also as baking powder. Liquid carbonic acid (liquid food carbonic acid) — the liquefied carbon dioxide gas which is stored under high pressure (~ 65-70 Atm). Colorless liquid. At production of liquid carbonic acid from cylinder in the atmosphere the part it evaporates, and other part forms flakes of dry ice.
Cylinders with liquid carbonic acid are widely applied as fire extinguishers and to production of soda water and lemonade.
Carbon dioxide gas is used as the protective environment when welding by wire, but at high temperatures there is its dissociation to release of oxygen. The emitted oxygen oxidizes metal. In this regard it is necessary to enter into welding wire deoxidants, such as manganese and silicon. Other consequence of influence of the oxygen which is also connected with oxidation is falloff of surface tension that leads, among other things, to more intensive spraying of metal, than when welding in argon or Gely.
